Safety Innovations Through the Years

Did you know that the invention of the three-point safety belt came from Volvo? Back in 1959, a Volvo engineer named Nils Bohlin invented this type of seatbelt, which is estimated to have saved over one million lives! Here's a quick look at the many other Volvo safety innovations:

  • 1972: Rearward-facing child seat
  • 1978: World’s first belt-positioning booster cushion for children four and up
  • 1990: First built-in booster cushion for children
  • 1991: Side Impact Protection System
  • 1994: First side-impact airbags
  • 1998: Whiplash Protection System
  • 1998: Inflatable curtain airbag
  • 2002: Roll-Over Protection System
  • 2003: Blind Spot Information System
  • 2008: City Safety, an autonomous emergency braking system
  • 2010: Pedestrian detection with full auto brake
  • 2014: Run-off road protection
  • 2016: Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert
  • 2018: Oncoming mitigation by braking system
  • 2019: The E.V.A. (Equal Vehicles for All) Initiative
  • 2020: Speed cap of 112 mph

Driver Assistance Systems

Driving can be stressful. But with Volvo driver assistance systems, you'll have that extra layer of protection to take on the road with confidence. Here are the various driver assistance systems that Volvo vehicles offer:

If this system detects a potential collision with a pedestrian, cyclist or another vehicle, it can automatically brake for you.1

This system helps you stay centered in your lane. If you start to drift out of your lane, this system will steer your vehicle back. If you continue to drift, the steering wheel will vibrate2 to warn you.2

In the event that you drift past the outer lane marking, this system will steer you back onto the road. It may also automatically apply the brakes.

When you're ready to back out of a parking space, this system ensures that you can do so safely, providing warnings if a vehicle is approaching or applying the brakes if a potential collision is detected.3

This system helps you stay centered in your lane during heavy traffic with alerts and active support. When a vehicle enters either of your blind spots, it can inform you by activating a light on either the left or right side mirror.2

This helpful camera system provides a 360° bird's eye view when parking, making parallel parking easier.

Stay informed on road conditions like never before. With cloud-based communication, you and other connected drivers can share and receive information, such as alerts for slippery road conditions.2

Safety Improvements

As a leader in vehicle safety, Volvo is committed to you and your passengers’ safety. Volvo is taking proactive steps to protect drivers against the dangers of speeding, intoxication and distraction on the road. They are combating these issues with a speed cap of 112 mph (which was introduced in 2020) on all new vehicles and are developing self-driving vehicles and driver monitoring cameras for the near future. In addition, a new feature called Care Key allows Volvo owners to set limits on speeds for other drivers.

Safety Research

Volvo safety is backed by more than 40 years of research. The Accident Research Team has been collecting and analyzing collision data since 1970, and in 2019, they made their findings available with the E.V.A. (Equal Vehicles for All) Initiative. They have found that women are more likely to be injured than men in car accidents, and their goal is to make cars equally safe for everyone. Volvo has addressed these discrepancies by developing features like their Whiplash Protection System, Side Impact Protection System, Inflatable Curtain airbag and more.
